Declaration of election results 24 hours after polls unrealistic – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah [watch video].

The Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says it is unrealistic for the EC to declare the results of the 2020 elections 24 hours after the close of polls on December 7.

According to Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, these unrealistic expectations created by the EC might force them to “cook numbers” if they are unable to announce it within that timeframe.

He said, “They are creating unrealistic expectations and then when the day comes and by that time they are not able to announce the results, what will they do?

“Are they going to force numbers? Are they going to cook numbers? Are they going to announce anything at all just because they want to meet an unrealistic 24-hour timeline?” he quizzed.

His comment comes on the back of the Director of Electoral Services, Dr Serebour Quaicoe’s statement that the EC will ensure that the results of the 2020 December polls are released 24 hours after voting closes.

“All things being equal, we are hoping that before we go to bed on the 8th of December, we would have come out with the presidential results,” he said.

Speaking to the Press on Wednesday, Afriyie Ankrah noted that even though having a timely results is ideal, a hasty declaration can mar the credibility of the 2020 results.

“These are the things they do and then they create problems for everybody, nobody has put a gun to their head. It is important to have a timely result but it is better to have accurate, truthful results that reflect what the people voted for.”

The EC Chairperson, Jean Mensah during a training section with journalists, stated that the level of transparency in the electoral process makes it impossible to tamper with the processes in favour of one party or another.

“We have tried our best to open up everything and, therefore, even if the president is your uncle or father, there is absolutely nothing you can do,” she added.

Despite the EC’s assurance, Mr Ankrah indicated that the NDC would not condone anything less than a credible result.

He said the inconsistency of the EC questions the seriousness of the Commission, adding that “Jean Mensa is running the EC like her IEA. A one-woman NGO, where she does whatever she likes.”
