Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwah has accused the former moderator of the Presbytarian Church Rt Rev Prof Emmanuel Martey of supporting what he calls “Akufo-Addo’s grand heist against God and the Ghanaian people.”

Mr Okudzeto who has been passionate about issues surrounding the National Cathedral since its announcement wondered why the man of God had been quiet concerning issues bordering on the Cathedral, even when his other colleagues serving on the Board of Trustees of the edifice have resigned citing various issues of lack of transparency and corruption.

Early 2023, some three senior members of the Clergy who are members of the Board of Trustees of the Cathedral;  Dr Mensa Otabil, General Overseer of International Central Gospel Church; Dag Heward-Mills, founder and leader of the Lighthouse Chapel International; and Cephas Omenyo, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church resigned.

Mr Ablakwa who revealed the resignation of Dr Otabil cited ‘illegality happening’ as the reason for his resignation.

He said “There is quite an uneasy calm among the Board of Trustees. And I can confirm that one imminent priest has walked away from the Board; the revered Dr. Mensa Otabil is no longer with them.

Bishop Dag Heward-Mills who also resigned from the Board in August 2022 expressed disappointment at the leadership of the edifice for ignoring concerns he raised in several letters he wrote to them.

He said “I feel that the treatment of the issues I have raised in my several letters has been unfortunate. My letters have been ignored in the past; not attended to for years, and at best addressed flippantly.”

The immediate past moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Rev. Professor Cephas Omenyo who was also on the  Cathedral’s Board of Trustees also stepped down from the Board citing ill health.

Some other members of the Board have written to demand an independent forensic audit of the edifice.

Rev Martey is yet to be publicly heard on the debate surrounding the National Cathedral, but Mr Ablakwah who shared a post on his X account on September 12, opined, the Reverend’s silence was due to the fact that the he supported whatever stance had been taken by the President as far as the National Cathedral was concerned.

“Who could ever have predicted that after all his vitriolic and blistering attacks on President Mahama and his government, the hitherto loquacious Rev. who once screamed in search of “Nyansafo)” would today see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil about the world’s most expensive and sacrilegious US$110million pit.” Mr Okudzeto questioned?
